This 5-year-old bourbon is batch # 23-10134 and has been given a “Heavy” Toast level and a Char Level “#2” during the aging process. The toasting process involves inserting a burning element into the center of the barrel without allowing the flame to touch the wood. This technique has become very popular among bourbon enthusiasts.
The bourbon has a clear gold and brown tint, indicating its maturity. On the nose, there is a sweet aroma that could be burnt sugar or vanilla, with a slight char aroma and other spicy notes that are difficult to identify.
At 114 proof, the bourbon feels a bit hot on the palate, but the taste is well-balanced. There is a char flavor followed by a hint of cinnamon spice, with a subtle touch of cocoa. The flavor is reminiscent of roasted marshmallows, which some might enjoy.
The finish is a sweet char that lingers, with a slight hint of cinnamon. It is not a lengthy finish, but it is enjoyable.
Overall, I would rate this bourbon a 5/10. While it is a good sipping bourbon, it falls a little short in terms of complexity and richness of flavors, aroma, and finish. However, it is still a decent drink and worth trying. At a mid-$70s price point, I would recommend the black and gold label Barrel Strength bourbon over this one. Nonetheless, I would not turn down a glass of this bourbon if offered.
